Yesterday was our much anticipated all school assembly with Masauko Chipembere, and it was such a blast! It was the first time the middle school and high school had ever come together for an event like this, and the concert was definitely worth the scheduling hassle. High schoolers and middle schoolers alike were mesmerized by Chipembere’s unique and exciting style, and from the moment he started singing he brought the audience in and allowed us to be a part of his performance. Chipembere even sang a song in Chichewa, Malawi’s national language. With each song, Chipembere told an anecdote about what the song means to him and how and why he was inspired to write it, which was another incredibly meaningful part of Chipembere’s performance. Music is a large part of so many communities and cultures, so getting the chance to explore global citizenship through something as universally connective as music was very special. Throughout the concert, Poly students were invited to sing the beats behind Chipembere’s songs and to go up to the stage and dance next to Chipembere. Students were drawn in by the overall charisma and happiness of the performance, and I’m so glad we got the chance to hear from such an amazing Poly alumn.
