Reflection on Samantha Power GIP Event

This past week, the Polytechnic Global Scholars as well as students from all around Los Angeles got the amazing opportunity to attend an event with former United States Ambassador to the UN, Samantha Power, and we even got the chance to have a special student Q&A with her. We were also each given a copy of her new book, The Education of an Idealist: A Memoir, and I’m very excited to start reading! The first part of the day was the student Q&A, where the students got the chance to ask deeper and more personal questions than just policy; I really appreciated this section of the day, and I definitely got a better understanding of her and her ideas through this more intimate space. It was also very reassuring as a young person and as a student to have such an important political figure dedicate an entire Q&A session to only students, since often people look over the presence of young people in the world. As someone who strives to one day have a career in global studies and/or government, Samantha Power is an extremely inspiring figure to me, and hearing her talk about how she got involved in her career was so interesting. During the student Q&A session, we covered many topics ranging from Trump’s recent communication with the Taliban to her personal career story; all of the topics discussed were incredibly interesting and captivating. After the student section was lunch panel, where Ambassador Power was asked more hefty policy questions in front of a broader audience. There, we got the chance to eat lunch with other Global Scholars and students from Partnership for Success!.
